“But I don’t understand! I don’t understand how this all happens, how we go through this. I mean - I knew her, and then she’s … there’s just a body, and I don’t understand why she just can’t get back in it and not be dead anymore! It’s stupid! It’s mortal and stupid! And … and Xander’s crying and not talking, and … and I was having fruit punch, and I thought, ‘Well, Joyce will never have any more fruit punch - ever, and she’ll never have eggs, or yawn, or brush her hair, not ever,’ and no one will explain to me why.”

Buffy the Vampire Slayer - 5x16 - The Body

This scene gets me every time. One of the most moving in all of Buffy, in my opinion. Zoom

A tournament of verbal smarts and fraudulence: “Dave Eggers’ 826LA is hosting a fun event on August 14th — it’s a spelling bee fundraiser that encourages cheating. The more money you raise, the more ways you’ll be allowed to cheat. For example, $100 will get you a letter hint, but $1,000 will let you switch places with a team member when you’re stuck in a rut.”

This sounds fantastically fun. Wish I lived near Santa Monica, not least for the chance to 1) spell and 2) spell in close proximity to John Krasinski. (via Boing Boing)

Honestly,  I can’t imagine anyone NOT having that reaction to Tutu (did I mention he hugged me once?), and I can imagine that the Dahli Lama is just as awesome.

How can you not reblog this? Cuuuuuuuuute.

Irish calendar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

jwisser:

  • Spring - February, March, April.
  • Summer - May, June, July.
  • Autumn - August, September, October.
  • Winter - November, December, January.

This is a continuation of the Celtic and Gaelic system, which is pagan in origin. This is particularly evident in the Irish (Gaeilge) names for May (Bealtaine), August (Lúnasa) and November (Samhain), which were the names of Gaelic pagan festivals. In addition, the names for September (Meán Fómhair) and October (Deireadh Fómhair) translate directly as “middle of autumn” and “end of autumn”.

This is also the understanding of the seasons I’ve had ever since I was a kid. I feel vindicated.

ahem..

Well now.

absolutely. when i studied horus and the egyptian gods when writing my second kids book, i came upon this. there are actually pictures of mary and jesus that were clearly taken from Horus pictures, and the hand that was holding the breast has a vestigial pose in the mary/jesus painting, but nothing to explain the hand position, as the breast was removed in the jesus version…this parallel of fables and mythology has been remarked upon by historians. in fact, i used this body of knowledge to foil those who would proselytize and wrote about it in my Christmas 2006 post at El Grito: Wining About Jesus.
